Stringtown GEAR UP Students Toured Local Community Historical Sites

Twenty-eight freshman and sophomore GEAR UP students from Stringtown Public Schools recently participated in an educational field trip that highlighted local historical events and places. Stringtown faculty members Matt Sandmann and Beth Murray, GEAR UP Education Coordinator Denise Lovell, and Atoka Museum Director Cindy Wallis guided the students during the excursion. Students began the day with a presentation covering the 1975 musical event 48 Hours in Atoka. The historical gathering was held at a local pastureland where more than 50,000 people met for a large outdoor concert. Indianola GEAR UP Students Tour the Outsiders House Museum

Twenty-eight Indianola ninth and tenth grade GEAR UP students recently toured the Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, OK. Students started the tour by stepping into the house where the movie was playing in the main room. Tour guide Donnie Rich shared stories about how the actors came back and signed their names on the wall. He then gave a tour of the house where the movie was filmed. Bokoshe GEAR UP students tour the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium

Bokoshe ninth and tenth-grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium in Tulsa, Ok. During the guided tour, GEAR UP students learned about the history of the MD-80 aircraft, Grumman-14A Tomcat, and the jet engines. After the guided tour, the students visited the Planetarium, where they watched a 45-minute video learning about stars, planets, and black holes in space. Canadian GEAR UP Students Tour Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium

Fifty-one Canadian freshmen and sophomore GEAR UP students recently toured the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and Planetarium. GEAR UP students received a guided tour of the museum. The guides shared stories of their time in the aviation industry as they explained the aerospace industry through the utilization of an array of visual aids spanning over 12 years. Haileyville GEAR UP Students Explore The Outsiders House Museum

Fifteen Haileyville ninth and tenth-grade GEAR UP students recently toured The Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, OK. The tour began with guide Donnie Rich telling the students about the book’s author S. E. Hinton, who currently lives in the Tulsa area. Hinton wrote The Outsiders book her sophomore year in high school and received a D on the writing assignment. The book was then published in her junior year of high school. Hartshorne GEAR UP Students Tour the Oklahoma Aquarium

18 Hartshorne freshman and sophomore GEAR UP students recently toured the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma. GEAR UP students started the day with the Director of Education and Research Ann Money with a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium. She pointed out that while Oklahoma may be distant from the nearest ocean, our ecosystems are connected by the Arkansas River.  She emphasized that when we care for our local environment, we care for the world’s environment. Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP sponsors virtual Chad Cargill ACT Test Prep Workshop for GEAR UP sophomores

550 area high school sophomore GEAR UP students from 30 schools learned how to better prepare for the ACT as they attended a virtual, three-hour workshop presented by Chad Cargill, Founder and President of Cargill Consulting, Inc. The workshop was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP—Ignite Belief grant program. During high school, Cargill knew he needed to earn scholarships in order to attend Oklahoma State University. McAlester GEAR UP Students Take a Virtual Tour of the Dallas Holocaust Museum

Two hundred fifty-three McAlester freshman and sophomore GEAR UP students participated in a virtual tour of the Dallas Holocaust Museum. The tour began with an introduction of the tour guides Kathy Garber, Carol Pinker, and Veronique Jonas and a brief talk about the history and mission of the Dallas Holocaust Museum. The museum was founded in 1984 by a group of Dallas area Holocaust Survivors. LeFlore ninth and 10th grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of TT (Texas Tech University) in Lubbock, Texas. Nejahla Hopkins, a current public relations student, connected with the students via Zoom, a virtual meeting platform, where she took the students on a virtual walking tour of the campus.   The tour began at West Hall, home to the Visitors Center, Office of Admissions, and Student Financial Center. Wister GEAR UP Students Take a Virtual Tour of Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Wister freshman and sophomore GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual college tour of Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU), the home of the Savage Storm. The students met with Recruiter Steven Harris via Zoom. Harris started the tour by asking the students about their future career interests. After viewing a short video, Harris discussed the top majors SOSU offers, including Safety and Aviation. Harris also reviewed the SOSU programs that the students showed interest in earlier on the tour. He encouraged students to find a college that was a good fit for them and to get involved on campus.
