Wilburton ninth grade GEAR UP students tour the University of Arkansas Fort Smith

Wilburton ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured UAFS (University of Arkansas Fort Smith). Students were met by UAFS student ambassadors, and discussed the admissions process as well as on-campus and online degree programs. UAFS offers 74 academic programs, including 33 bachelor degrees, 14 associate degrees, and 27 certificates. As the students were divided into two groups and led through campus, UAFS student ambassadors discussed the importance of freshman year of high school, which is the time to begin thinking about future educational plans. Wilburton eighth grade GEAR UP students recently toured NSU (Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah. Students began the day at the W. Roger Webb Educational Technology Center, where they were greeted by NSU Campus Visit Program Graduate Assistant Bailey Rush and were presented with an overview of NSU. After the presentation. Wilburton seventh and eighth grade students tour the Tulsa Zoo

Wilburton seventh and eighth Grade GEAR UP students recently visited the Tulsa Zoo. The 85-acre, non-profit Zoo is home to various types of wildlife. Students roamed, ran, and played while learning about various species. The Zoo has many different exhibits with animals housed in recreated natural environments. The students explored several various exhibits such as the Robert J. LaFortune Wild Life Trek. This exhibit is a four-building complex that focuses on animals from around the world and their adaptations to life in the water, desert, forest, and cold. Wilburton 7th grade GEAR UP students recently toured Eastern Oklahoma State College. Eastern Oklahoma State College is a public community college, offering associate degrees and certification programs. The students visited the Music Department, Mountaineer Radio Station, the library, and Student Center. Eastern Recruiter Karen Darby led the tour and spoke to the students about the importance of college and the opportunities that Eastern can provide because it is close to home and has a low student-to-faculty ratio. Wilburton 8th grade GEAR UP students tour Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology

Wilburton 8th grade GEAR UP students recently toured Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in Okmulgee (OSUIT). Sable Vasquez, OSUIT Special Events Coordinator and tour guide began the tour at the Donald W. Reynolds Technology Center. Students completed Tour Tracker information sheets, and Vasqiez provided an overview of what students should expect during the tour. The students left the Donald W. Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP Hosts Bill Cordes for Motivational Speech to Students During National GEAR UP Week

In celebration of National GEAR UP Week, over 2,000 7th and 8th grade students from Southeast Oklahoma engaged in a “YOGOWYPI” moment with Bill Cordes at Wilburton High School gymnasium and at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center in Poteau. Students heard a great message on succeeding in school and getting the most out of life.
