Lane eight grade GEAR UP students tour Atoka County Museum

Twenty Lane GEAR UP students recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery. The students were greeted by Museum Director Cindy Wallis who gave them a brief overview of the museum exhibits and introduced them to Clyde and Elsie Frost, the parents of world renown bull rider, Lane Frost, who is featured in an exhibit in the museum.  Mrs. Frost shared Lane’s story including moving to the students’ community of Lane, OK and living in Atoka.  She recounted his rodeo experiences and achievements, his untimely death, and the years since the accident.  Students ask questions and took pictures with

McAlester ninth grade GEAR UP students tour the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery Part 2

Thirty-five McAlester ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery. The tour began in the museum where students saw various exhibits. There were a series of exhibits, which showcased the lifestyles of the late 1800s and early 1900s, including a doctor’s office, post office, barbershop whom not only cut hair but pulled teeth, and classroom. Students were fascinated by how far things have changed and what they are used to today in our society. McAlester ninth grade GEAR UP students tour the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery Part 1

Thirty-four McAlester ninth Grade GEAR UP students recently visited the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery. Students participated in an outdoor walking tour of the Civil War Cemetery, learning about the history of the Civil War in Southeast Oklahoma, including the fact that the cemetery is the only designated Confederate cemetery in Oklahoma. Students also toured the museum, which includes history of Atoka County, such as displays of legendary professional bull rider Lane Frost, country music entertainer Reba McEntire, and Academy Award-winning artist Matthew Mungle, who are originally from the area. Stringtown eighth and ninth grade GEAR UP students tour Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery

Twenty-nine Stringtown eighth and ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery located north of Boggy River in Atoka. Students were given a walking tour of the property, which includes a Civil War cemetery—the only in Oklahoma, several historical homes, and a church. The church has been relocated from Boggy Bend in the northeast part of the county to the museum site, and was started by “Boss” Harrison, a relative to several of the current Stringtown students. Haileyville eighth and ninth grade students visit The Durant State Fish Hatchery and Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetary

At the Durant State Fish Hatchery, students learned about the history and efforts of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Fisheries Division. Specifically, students gained an in-depth knowledge of the Florida largemouth bass production program, which allows the State Fish Hatchery technicians to produce trophy-sized bas that are stocked in public Oklahoma lakes. McAlester ninth grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery, giving students an in-depth knowledge of Oklahoma history. Students participated in an outdoor walking tour of the Civil War Cemetery, learning about the history of the Civil War in Southeast Oklahoma. The cemetery was first established by travelers on the Butterfield stage road when measles swept through the area. Students also toured the museum, which includes history of Atoka County, such as displays of legendary bull rider, Lane Frost, and country music entertainer, Reba McEntire, who are originally from the area.

Harmony GEAR UP students tour the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery

Fifteen GEAR UP students from Harmony school recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery. Established in 1979, the Museum covers the history of the Civil War in Oklahoma as well as the history of Atoka County. The seventh and eighth-grade students were greeted by Museum Director Cindy Wallis who began the day by asking them to sign a birthday card for a former Atoka resident who is celebrating his 100th birthday.
