Twenty-eight Eufaula ninth grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology in Okmulgee. Students began the day meeting Friends of Pete, the on-campus student recruitment team that assists with recruitment events. Students viewed a presentation about OSUIT programs, and then participated in a walking tour of campus, learning about the LASSO Center, library, and graphic design and culinary arts programs. Roger Webb Educational Technology Center where they were greeted by NSU Campus Visit Program Graduate Assistant Bailey Rush and NSU Student Ambassadors, Brittany Waters, Cheyenne Jones, and Tim Gardenhigh. Sixty-nine Spiro ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured UAFS (University of Arkansas Fort Smith). Upon arrival, student ambassadors MiKayliegh Norris, Fatima Bonilla, and Abigail Powloshi introduced students to the heart of the campus, the Smith-Pendergraft CC (Campus Center), and provided an overview of UAFS. The CC is home to student aid and financial services, campus bookstore, student activities center, and food court. Antlers ninth grade GEAR UP students recently visited Murray State College in Tishomingo. Students began the day at Fletcher Auditorium, and then toured some of the main buildings on campus. Student Affairs and Student Support representatives provided students with a question and answer session about financial aid, housing, campus life, and programs offered. At the Durant State Fish Hatchery, students learned about the history and efforts of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Fisheries Division. McAlester ninth grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured the Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery, giving students an in-depth knowledge of Oklahoma history. Forty-five area middle and high school math and science teachers recently participated in a three-day TI (Texas Instruments) training at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton. Fifteen area middle school math and science teachers recently participated in a two-day beginner TI (Texas Instruments) workshop while 13 teachers participated in a one-day intermediate and advanced training at Eastern Oklahoma State College in McAlester. The workshops were sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP and was designed to help teachers integrate technology effectively into instruction. The trainings were conducted by Texas Instruments Specialists Mike Smith, Fred Ferneyhough, Sandra Hocutt, and Cassie Whitecotton.

Clayton eighth-grade GEAR UP students visit Fort Smith National Historic Site

Eighth-grade GEAR UP students from Clayton recently visited the Fort Smith National Historic Site in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Students viewed a short film of the history of the area and the fort. Following the film, students were led on a tour of the museum by Louanne Weir, volunteer with the National Park Service.
