Eufaula GEAR UP Students Tour the OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden

One hundred and twenty GEAR UP sophomore and junior students recently visited the OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden in Oklahoma City’s Adventure District in northeast Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Zoo covers over 100 acres of beautiful gardens and animal exhibits. Students enjoyed exploring the indoor and outdoor animal exhibits, which included a variety of habitats, such as Sanctuary Asia, Oklahoma Trails, Cat Forest/Lion Overlook, Butterfly Garden, and the Noble Aquatic Center. Eufaula 11th grade GEAR UP Students Tour Northeastern State University

Thirty-eight Eufaula High School eleventh-grade GEAR UP students recently toured NSU (Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Students began the tour with a greeting and presentation from NSU’s presentation speaker  Braydin Ballard and tour guides Ashley Onyemechi and Jaci Nixon, who are all current NSU students. Ballard presented students with an overview of NSU, highlighting information on how to become an NSU Riverhawk. Ballard discussed how NSU has 56 exceptional undergraduate and 25 graduate degree programs to choose from and different scholarship opportunities available. Eufaula GEAR UP Students Participate in a Virtual Tour of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum

Eighty-nine Eufaula freshman and sophomore GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum located in Claremore, Oklahoma. Museum tour guide discussed that just like many of them, Will Rogers came from a humble beginning in Oklahoma but that he was able to rise to a level of popularity unseen by many from our state. Will Rogers was a radio personality, actor, most sought-after public speaker, and one of the most read newspaper columnists of his time. Another significant fact about his career was that he was an accomplished novelist and lariat rope specialist.

Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP sponsors virtual Chad Cargill ACT Test Prep Workshop for GEAR UP sophomores

550 area high school sophomore GEAR UP students from 30 schools learned how to better prepare for the ACT as they attended a virtual, three-hour workshop presented by Chad Cargill, Founder and President of Cargill Consulting, Inc. The workshop was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP—Ignite Belief grant program. During high school, Cargill knew he needed to earn scholarships in order to attend Oklahoma State University. Eufaula GEAR UP Students Virtually Tour Eastern Oklahoma State College

Seventy-one Eufaula freshmen and sophomore GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual college tour of EOSC (Eastern Oklahoma State College). Recruiter Karen Darby conducted an in-person presentation along with a virtual tour of the EOSC campus. Darby began by discussing some of the benefits of attending a two-year college, such as cost-saving opportunities and being close to home. GEAR UP students received a pamphlet with all the degree programs EOSC offers. Darby then introduced some of the most acclaimed programs offered at EOSC. Eufaula GEAR UP students visited the Cherokee Heritage Center

Thirty-nine Eufaula ninth grade GEAR UP students visited the Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill, OK. Students toured Diligwa, a 1710 Cherokee Village. Students explored the primary council house learning that Cherokee families are matrilineal, which allows women to choose their husbands, hunt, fish, gather, and go to war. Students viewed flint knapping, a process in which flint or quartzite is struck with items such as hammer stone or the base of a deer antler to shape stone. Eufaula eighth GEAR UP students tour Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology

Forty-six Eufaula eighth grade GEAR UP students recently toured OSUIT (Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology) in Okmulgee. Students started their day on campus by meeting with Friends of Pete, the on-campus student recruitment team. Students learned about various OSUIT academic programs, campus life, and the importance of finding a career they love. Students walked around campus learning about free medical services, banking and postal services, and the convenience store. Students viewed a dorm room, and imagined life on campus while visiting Covelle Hall, home to a basketball court and wellness center. Eufaula GEAR UP eighth grade girls tour area public libraries

Twenty-nine GEAR UP students recently visited area public libraries to learn about resources and programs available within the different library systems of Oklahoma. Students began the morning by visiting the McAlester Public Library. Yuliya Zhugina, McAlester Public Library’s Youth Services Coordinator, talked with students about summer and after-school programs the library offers free of charge. The programs offered are educational, social, fun, and FREE. Zhugina is excellent at planning activities that teens are interested in and eager to participate.
