LeFlore eighth and ninth grade GEAR UP students recently toured CSC (Connors State College) in Warner, Okla. CSC Assistant Director of Recruitment Chandler Young met with the group. Young provided students with a handout, which included information about academic degrees, campus life, tuition cost, financial aid, and more. Young answered questions about degree programs and discussed her own college experience with the students. Young then led students on a campus tour, visiting the educational buildings. Students sat in a classroom while Young discussed the difference between high school and college classes. Students ventured across campus to visit the Melvin Self
LeFlore seventh and eighth grade GEAR UP students recently visited the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Nature Center located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center sits on 170 acres of land in Fort Smith that were previously part of Fort Chaffee. Exhibits play a large part in the nature center. In addition to the interactive displays and exhibits, the center houses a classroom for educational programs such as the Hunter’s Safety and Boating Safety courses. LeFlore students participated in three activities while at the Nature Center—laser shot, archery, and a guided hike around the property.
LeFlore 7th and 8th grade GEAR UP students recently traveled to Wilburton to tour Eastern Oklahoma State College. Eastern Oklahoma State College is a public community college offering associate degree and certification programs. Students visited the nursing department, radio station, science department, the library, and student center. Recruiter Karen Darby led the tour and spoke to the students about the importance of college and the opportunities that Eastern can give them because it is close to home and has a low student-to-faculty ratio.
