Poteau GEAR UP Students Participate in Virtual Education Program with the Tulsa Zoo

Two hundred three ninth and 10th grade Poteau GEAR UP students recently participated in Tulsa Zoo’s virtual Zoo 2 U program with Education Specialists Tricia Hindley and Claire Stephenson as well as Volunteer Manager Lisa Cobb. Students were given an in-depth look at the process behind exhibit design in a zoo setting. Hindley and Stephenson explained the factors that play a role in exhibit design so that Tulsa Zoo can meet the needs of three groups: the animals, zookeepers, and the public. Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP sponsors virtual Chad Cargill ACT Test Prep Workshop for GEAR UP sophomores

550 area high school sophomore GEAR UP students from 30 schools learned how to better prepare for the ACT as they attended a virtual, three-hour workshop presented by Chad Cargill, Founder and President of Cargill Consulting, Inc. The workshop was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP—Ignite Belief grant program. During high school, Cargill knew he needed to earn scholarships in order to attend Oklahoma State University. Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP Partner Schools Receive Technology During COVID-19 Pandemic

Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP recently purchased a variety of technology items for area GEAR UP schools to assist with the schools’ needs for virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each GEAR UP school indicated its immediate need to help conduct virtual education for students. GEAR UP spent over $194,650 on laptops, headsets and Chromebooks. The technology was distributed to cohort schools based on the requested need. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.

Poteau GEAR UP Students Explore the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma

One hundred seventy-six Poteau ninth and tenth-grade GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of the USAO (University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma), located in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Recruiter Zoe Brown met with the students via Zoom to give an overview of USAO, including the history of the campus, majors offered, and a look into student life on campus. USAO is a public college home to about 1,000 undergrad students. Founded in 1908, USAO was a women’s college until becoming co-ed in 1965. Poteau eighth grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured UAFS (University of Arkansas Fort Smith) in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Students were greeted by Admissions Officer Megan Gabbard, and began their tour in the auditorium of the Windgate Art and Design Building. While in the auditorium, Gabbard spoke with students about what it is like to attend UAFS. Poteau 9th grade visits University of Arkansas Fort Smith

Poteau ninth grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured UAFS (University of Arkansas Fort Smith in Fort Smith). Students were greeted by Admissions Officer Morgan Kratts and began their tour at the campus amphitheater, which was completed in 2015. The amphitheater serves as a common gathering area as well as a host for small concerts and plays on campus. Next, students toured the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center (CC). Poteau seventh grade girls tour the Oklahoma Aquarium

Sixty-nine Poteau GEAR UP seventh grade students recently traveled to Jenks to visit the Oklahoma Aquarium. The aquarium allowed students to self-explore the nine exhibits it houses, including the most recent exhibit, the Polynesian Reef. There are several touch tanks that allow students a hands-on experience with aquatic creatures. The Polynesian Reef exhibit is home to many species of fish and coral. Poteau seventh grade boys visit the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks

Forty-four seventh grade Poteau GEAR UP students recently travel to the Oklahoma Aquarium. The aquarium is home to many species of fish, sharks, and other sea life as well as wildlife native to Oklahoma. Students explored exhibits as well as touched aquatic animals up close and personal. The aquarium houses many touch tanks. Students were able to feel shrimp, starfish, muscles, sharks, and stingrays within these tanks. Poteau eighth grade GEAR UP girls explore the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium

Fifty-three Poteau eighth grade girls recently traveled to Tulsa to explore the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium. The museum houses many different aircraft and replicas related to different eras of flight, including the aviation history in Oklahoma. In the planetarium, viewers can recline and enjoy full-dome videos. Poteau students enjoyed the show “Stars”. Fifty-five Poteau eighth grade students recently toured The Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium. Upon arrival, students entered the planetarium and experienced the high-definition visual presentation “Stars,” They learned of the creation and death of stars, space travel, and how stars impacted past cultures, and their travel habits. “I liked learning about the solar system in the planetarium and how stars are born and die” said eighth grade student Andrew Riley.
