Fifty-six junior and senior GEAR UP students from Hartshorne High School recently toured Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. The tour began in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union, where student ambassadors greeted students and gave an overview of what the campus has to offer. Next, students toured different campus buildings such as the Sports Performance Center, Fine Arts Building, Chickasaw/Choctaw Halls, student housing, and cafeteria. Students heard about many different majors offered on and off campus. Southeastern was in the middle of Homecoming week; students experienced having lunch on the lawn with the college student. The students mingled and talked with current college students while enjoying lunch.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
