EOSC GEAR UP recently hosted a motivational speaking event featuring Jim Morris at Connors State College, the inspiring former professional baseball player whose life story was depicted in the 2002 film The Rookie, which left attendees deeply moved and motivated to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
Morris’s journey is one of perseverance and determination. After a promising start in Major League Baseball, an injury forced him to retire early. Yet, against all odds, he made an incredible comeback in his 30s, returning to the major leagues as a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. His story instantly symbolized never giving up on a dream, even when it seemed too late.
During the event, Jim shared his experiences, offering insights into how tenacity, hard work, and belief in oneself can turn seemingly impossible goals into reality. He emphasized the importance of setting goals, maintaining a positive mindset, and persevering through challenges.
Attendees were particularly inspired by his message that age or setbacks should never define one’s potential. Just like in the film, where Jim’s return to baseball was nothing short of miraculous, he reminded everyone that it’s never too late to chase a dream or start something new.
Jim Morris’s event wasn’t just a retelling of his life’s story—it was a powerful call to action for anyone seeking to make a change, overcome adversity, and push their limits—his message: Dream big. Work hard. Never quit.
The event was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
