EOSC GEAR UP recently hosted a motivational speaking event featuring Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL running back Billy Sims at Rose State College. Billy met with GEAR UP students, delivering an inspiring message about hard work, resilience, and the importance of education. Drawing from his own journey—from humble beginnings to college football stardom—Sims shared how dedication, discipline, and support from mentors helped shape his success on and off the field.
His words energized the students, and they appreciated the opportunity to engage with a sports legend who emphasized the power of staying focused on goals and believing in oneself. Sims encouraged the young scholars to make the most of the opportunities provided by GEAR UP and to never give up on their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
The visit was motivational and a reminder that greatness is within reach when effort meets opportunity. After the event, Billy Sims took the students to his local restaurant in Midwest City and bought their dinner.
The event was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
