Recently Rattan 11th grade students visited the Aviation Sciences Institute at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Students met with current students Kenley Costin, Tatiana Beach, Kyle Lions, Alex Craycraft Ambassadors in Professional Pilot Program, and Cassie Woodward, Flight Administrator at the school. They discussed with Rattan students the training process and how to become a pilot. The students and instructors spoke about the cost of training and certifications needed for graduation and getting a job after graduation. They also covered the physical, psychological, and legal standards for being a pilot, both privately and professionally. Students were allowed to sit in training aircraft and a flight simulator that students use for training. Rattan students enjoyed getting see and hear about this unique program.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
