Seventy GEAR UP students from Coalgate High School recently traveled to Okmulgee, OK, to tour the campus of Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT). Kimberly Huntsberger, Campus Tour Coordinator, greeted the students and gave a brief overview of college life and the unique programs offered at OSUIT.
After the introduction, recruiters guided students on a walking tour of the campus, including the dormitories, Cowboy Café dining hall, Student Union, and Covelle Hall Wellness Center. Students had the opportunity to ask questions concerning housing options, admission requirements, internship opportunities, and job placement.
During the tour, GEAR UP students met with representatives from the Construction Management and Computer Information Technology programs. Instructors shared information about available programs and career pathways. After earning a two-year associate’s degree, graduates can begin their careers or seamlessly continue their education toward a bachelor’s degree. Instructors discussed college entrance requirements and reminded students to prepare for college now and consider a technology school for post-secondary education.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
