Thirty-three Spiro 11th grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently toured Connors State College in Warner, Ok. The tours began with Jessica Langston, Director of Recruitment and Enrollment Services, talking with the students about what is needed to become college students. They heard about how to apply to college, how to apply for financial aid and scholarships, the importance of their GPA, and admission requirements. She discussed what degree programs, athletics, and extra-curricular activities Connors offered. They also discussed campus and residential life. The students were allowed to ask questions before the walking tour of the campus. Two Connors students, Terin Sparro and Madisyn Moore, took the students on a walking tour of the campus. Students visited classrooms, the library, agriculture facilities, the gym, dorms, and the cafeteria. After the tour, the students ate lunch on campus, offering another life experience as a college student. During lunch, students shared their favorite parts of the tour and campus. Some students expressed their interest in applying to Connors in the future.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
