Eight GEAR UP teachers from partner schools recently attended a three-day ACT Prep workshop presented by Princeton Review. The workshop helped boost knowledge of test prep and lesson plans to use throughout the school year. During the workshop, participants were given techniques and tools to help their students improve their scores on the ACT. Each teacher who completed the workshop received an instructional kit, ACT kits for each GEAR UP student enrolled in their class, and an online platform for practice testing and further professional development. Providing professional development to teachers throughout the life of the grant ensures the information and practices provided continue and are sustained after the GEAR UP grant ends.
Eastern is in its sixth year of the $17 million federal GEAR UP grant and serves more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years. GEAR UP is a federal initiative to increase the number of low-income students who enter and successfully transition into postsecondary education.
