Thirty-two Crowder GEAR UP students recently toured OSUIT (Oklahoma State University of Technology) in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Students were greeted by OSUIT Student Success Facilitator Abigail Rush and current student Codi Carr at the Grady Clark Center. The day began with a presentation by Rush over OSUIT admission requirements, degree programs, and an overview of campus life. Students were then led on a walking tour of the campus. The first stop was the Culinary Arts department, where students received a program overview from Program Support Specialist Carrie Brownfield. Students were then allowed to explore the Aquaponics Lab. The second stop was at the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology department. Instructor Boyd King provided students with an interactive and hands-on presentation that included experiments over the program. Students received information on admission into the program, internships, and career opportunities after completing the program. The last stop on the tour was the Student Union, where students enjoyed lunch at the Cowboy Café.
The students heard about the different trade programs offered on campus, admission requirements, and college life on campus. Students reported their favorite part of the tour was the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration instructors’ presentation. After the tour, several students report OSUIT as a definite possibility for post-secondary education.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
