Panama ninth and 10th grade GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum in Oklahoma City. The tour guide began by stating facts behind the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing, which included why the bombing took place, who was involved, the conviction and sentencing of those responsible, the number of people who died, and how things in Oklahoma City were forever changed. The guide walked through the museum highlighting archives and memorabilia of special interest related to the bombing. To end the tour, students were shown the outdoor memorial, designed strategically to honor the people who lost their lives in the event. Students asked questions to gain a deeper understanding of the bombing since they were not alive during that time.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
