Twenty-eight Indianola ninth and tenth grade GEAR UP students recently toured the Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, OK. Students started the tour by stepping into the house where the movie was playing in the main room. Tour guide Donnie Rich shared stories about how the actors came back and signed their names on the wall. He then gave a tour of the house where the movie was filmed. They viewed never before seen photos and movie artifacts. Some of the artifacts were of outfits from the movie, as well as the director’s chair. Rich shared stories about scenes from the film. After the house tour, the students walked a few blocks down to Crutchfield Park, where the fight scene was filmed. The students then visited the gift shop and saw memorabilia from the movie and book. After the tour of The Outsiders House Museum, GEAR UP students ate lunch at Cici’s pizza.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
