Keota ninth and tenth-grade GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of LSU (Louisiana State University) Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Alyssa Chang, with the FOCUS Training Group and LSU Admissions Counselor Emily Harrison, led the virtual tour of LSU. The virtual tour began with Chang talking to the students about applying to college, ACT scores, financial aid, scholarships, and admission requirements. She also shared some fun facts about LSU, such as their mascot is a live tiger named Mike VII. She said the tiger is housed on campus and cared for by the LSU veterinary school. Next, LSU Admissions Counselor Emily Harrison talked more about what LSU has to offer their students. She said the most popular majors they offer are Pre-Medicine, Biological Sciences, Pre-Nursing, Psychology, Kinesiology, and Computer Science. Emily showed a video of the campus, giving the students a feel of what it would be like on campus and high lighting a few buildings. She pointed out the swimming pool in the shape of the letters LSU, the Tiger Stadium, Middleton Library, and the heart of their campus, the Quadrangle aka the Quad. She ended the virtual tour by giving the students her email, the campus website, and answering student questions about LSU.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
