Howe ninth and 10th grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of SOSU (Southeastern Oklahoma State University) in Durant, Okla. SOSU Recruiter Steven Harris connected with the students via Zoom, a virtual meeting platform, where he showed a presentation overview of SOSU and discussed various topics, including the admissions process and requirements, degree programs offered, the importance of ACT scores, and financial aid and scholarship opportunities. Harris highlighted the Aviation Science Institute, which provides students a high-quality education in aviation and flight training. Students took a virtual “walking tour” of campus where they visited the Bloomer Sullivan Basketball Arena, campus radio station, the Fine Arts building, Shearer Residence Hall and Suites, and the Glen D. Johnson Student Union. Harris offered a question and answer session at the end of the tour in addition to time for Howe High School Counselor Margo Wright, SOSU alumna, to share her experience as a SOSU student.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
