Twenty-six Haileyville ninth and tenth grade GEAR UP students recently toured Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Okla. Student Recruiter Hunter Sisemore greeted and led the students through Hemphill Hall, which is home to the college’s admissions, business, financial aid, student affairs and educational opportunity offices. The next stop on the tour was the Joe E. White Library. Students saw a freshmen dorm room, giving them an insight to what the living situation is like on campus. Students also saw various buildings, including the Costner-Balentine Student Center, which is where the cafeteria and bookstore are located. Students had time to shop in the college bookstore, allowing them to purchase CASC apparel and keepsakes. Due to COVID-19, students weren’t able to eat lunch on campus; however, they enjoyed pizza and arcade games at Mazzio’s.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
