Clayton eighth grade GEAR UP students recently toured EOSC (Eastern Oklahoma State College) in Wilburton. EOSC Recruiter Karen Darby welcomed the students at the E. E. Tourtellotte Student Center, and led them on a walking tour of campus. The first stop on the tour was the nursing department located in Gunning Hall. Darby explained how the life-like simulators operate as well as the continuing need for nurses now and in the future. Maria Martinez, Director of Library and Media Services, greeted the group at the Bill H. Hill Library Building. Martinez spoke about the importance of the library in college and and life. The next stop was the Mountaineer Radio Station, located in Baker Hall, which is home to the campus radio station the Mix 93.1. Eastern students have the opportunity to gain real-life experience in the broadcasting industry by interning at the radio station. Clayton students visited with Mountaineer Radio General Manager Doug Sims and On-Air Radio Personality Derek “the Rowdy Ranger” Hatridge. Students ended the tour with lunch at The Coal Mine, EOSC’s cafeteria.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
