Moyers GEAR UP students tour Oklahoma State University

Moyers GEAR UP students recently boarded a bus for a four–hour ride to Stillwater to tour Oklahoma State University. Students were happy to arrive at the doorstep of Eskimo Joe’s for lunch. Students enjoyed cheese fries and hamburgers with various toppings.

Following lunch, students were transported to the OSU campus. Students began in the Student Union Building on the third floor meeting room. OSU junior and Ag Education major Cody Dean and International Business and Marketing junior Jenna Johnson greeted students. The GEAR UP students filled out information cards.

Dean presented a PowerPoint about OSU and the application process for both admission and scholarships. Topics covered included ACT scores, applying for admission, scholarship opportunities and deadlines, housing options and the 200+ majors offered. Students were given an opportunity to ask questions.

Dean then began the walking tour and told the students about how it is important to build their résumé and contacts while at the University and to join clubs and organizations that are active on campus. As students waked past one of the dining choices, Dean highlighted the fact that there are several dining choices across campus, and there is food within five minutes of any point on the campus because of the 30+ dining options.

Students were taken to a popular meeting area on campus, the Chi Omega Clock area. The clock was gifted to the University in 1970 by the Chi Omega Sorority. While there Johnson spoke to students about the various classroom buildings on campus and scheduling class time and times to meet with teachers. She also discussed the importance of keeping in touch with instructors and keeping up with class requirements. OSU has a 19:1 teacher/tudent ratio and small study groups in each class.

Dean then led students to the Edmon Low Library. He explained the study areas on each floor—the higher the floor, the quieter the floor is. He mentioned the coffee shop located on the bottom floor of the library and reminded them that students are near a dining option no matter where they are on campus.

Dean and Johnson posed for photos with students before the Moyers students continued on a self–guided tour of the campus.

Moyers visited the Physical Sciences Building and Noble Research Center then on to the Athletic Center. Students enjoyed touring the Gallagher–Iba Arena and Heritage Hall, a museum filled with OSU memorabilia such as athletic uniforms, pennants, programs, ticket stubs, clippings, trophies, championship rings, letter jackets, drum major hats, homecoming tiaras, priceless photos and much more. The museum houses many different artifacts and memorabilia from athletes from the time of the founding of the University in 1890 to present day. Just outside the doors of the Museum is the entry to Boone Pickens Stadium where students had a photo opportunity and watched student athletes prepare for a workout.

“I loved it there!” said Moyers junior Laney Heath. “The campus was awesome, and I’m thinking about going to OSU!”

Moyers junior Chloe Berkey added, “OSU has the bet campus that I’ve been to yet!”

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural/educational in nature.
