LeFlore GEAR UP students tour at Southeastern
LeFlore GEAR UP students recently traveled to Durant to tour the home of the Savage Storm, Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU). The tour began at the Glen D. Johnson Student Union where admissions representatives talked to the GEAR UP students about the programs offered and answered questions about the campus. Students ate lunch at the Sodexo Food Service in the Student Union.
SOSU Admissions Counselor/Recruiter Laura Hendrickson led the students to the North Hall and Shearer Hall & Suites. Students learned about various housing options available. Next was Hallie McKinney which houses the ballroom, post office, health services and counseling services. Students then went into the Welcome Center and the Southeastern Barnes & Noble Bookstore where they were able to get a first–hand look into where they can buy books and get information about the campus and town.
GEAR UP students visited the Henry G. Bennett Memorial Library and learned about the many services and study areas available to Southeastern students. Students walked through Morrison Hall and Montgomery Auditorium, the Math Building, Science Building and Fine Arts Building.
The final stop on the tour was the Business Building where the students learned about some of the different business programs offered in the John Massey School of Business and the Aviation Program.
Hendrickson discussed the different scholarship opportunities and concluded the tour by answering questions.
“It was a great tour,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator Tara Stevens. “Southeastern is a viable option for our students so the tour provided a perfect chance for the students to see what Southeastern has to offer.”
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural/educational in nature.
