Fifty–five Antlers GEAR UP sophomores tour East Central University

Fifty–five GEAR UP sophomores from Antlers High School recently traveled to Ada to tour the East Central University campus. Antlers students were divided into two groups. Admissions Counselor Kylie Stephens led the girls while the boys were led across campus by Area Coordinator of Housing and Residence Life Aramis Douglas.

The tour began in the Bill S. Cole University Center, where they were greeted by ECU Director of Admissions BJ Echard. Echard discussed various activities in which student participate while at ECU including intramural sports, Greek life, music and seasonal holiday activities such as a zombie game at Halloween. He encouraged the students to take the ACT test and apply for as many scholarships as they can to pay for the cost of attending college. Echard emphasized the importance of keeping good grades and maintaining a good GPA.

Students walked down the tree– and flower–lined sidewalks that make up the ECU campus. Antlers students commented how beautiful the campus looked with all the wonderfully–maintained grounds and buildings. Students saw the Boswell Memorial Chapel, Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business, Education Building, Admissions Department, Faust Hall Gym, Linscheid Library and Taff Cafeteria.

Following the tour, Echard held a question/answer session with students. Then the Antlers guests enjoyed lunch in the ECU cafeteria. “Students were impressed with the campus and people of ECU,” said GEAR UP Education Coordinator LaDonna Baldwin. “Everyone was very welcoming and helpful while we were there. Many of our Antlers students voiced an interest in attending the university when they graduate from high school. It was a joy to be on campus at ECU and I look forward to returning.”

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural/educational in nature.
