Porum GEAR UP Students Tour Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Thirty-eight Porum High School Junior and Senior GEAR UP students recently toured Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. “The Campus of a Thousand Magnolias” Students were welcomed by University Admissions Counselor/Recruiters Baily Hendrickson and Ashlee Carr at the Glen D. Johnson Student Union. Hendrickson and Carr gave a brief overview of the different majors offered at SOSU and the application and admissions process.

Students went on a guided tour of the campus. Students were led down the Magnolia-lined walkways, where Hendrickson and Carr stopped at the different buildings and discussed the programs offered on campus. Buildings toured were the Russell Building, which houses the John Massey School of Business, Fine Arts Building, Science Building, Math Building, and Henry G. Bennett Library, were among the different stops. Hendrickson and Carr also discussed student organizations, student services, resources, and sports with the students during the tour.

The students enjoyed viewing a dorm room in Shearer Hall, the premiere living facility at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Shearer Hall houses more than 300 students in apartment-style suites. Hendrickson and Carr emphasized the importance of applying early to these dorms. Students ended the tour at the Glen D. Johnson Student Union, where they had lunch in the cafeteria.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
