Indianola GEAR UP students toured The University of Tulsa

Thirty Indianola GEAR UP students recently toured The University of Tulsa (TU) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founded in 1894, TU is a private, doctoral degree-granting, accredited institution. Students were greeted by a TU admissions counselor and University Ambassadors. Students were given a presentation by the TU Admissions Counselor which provided an overview of admission requirements, degree programs, scholarship opportunities, and campus life. After the presentation student were led on a walking tour of the campus by University Ambassadors. The campus is on a vast, grassy, quad-like space known as Dietler Commons and the predominant architectural style is English Gothic, which the students found interesting.

During the walking tour students were able to get an up-close look at all of the buildings for the six different colleges on the campus; Kendall College of Arts & Sciences, Collins College of Business, College of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and the Graduate School. Ambassadors provided students with information about over 25 different campus organizations that exist to support and sustain a diverse campus community. Students also learned about college traditions during their guided tour. After the tour ended the students had lunch at the University’s food court where they were able to experience what it is like to eat on campus.

The students enjoyed getting to see all of the buildings that were English Gothic and the atmosphere on campus. Meeting the University Ambassadors was their favorite part; they said they were amazing during the tour.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
