Stringtown GEAR UP Students tour Seminole State College

Twenty-six GEAR UP sophomores and juniors from Stringtown High School recently traveled to Seminole, OK, to tour the campus of Seminole State College (SSC). Caitlin Brown, Recruitment Specialist, greeted the students and gave them a brief overview of the admissions process. Each incoming student is assigned to a financial aid specialist who helps make the transition to college easier. After the introduction, Brown guided students on a walking tour of the campus, including the Business Department, Raymond Harber Field House, Student Union, and the Information Technology Building. Students explored the David Boren Library, which provides access to online research, private study areas, and an interlibrary loan program. The library also houses a food pantry designed to promote and support the health and well-being of the SSC community by providing free supplemental food assistance to college students. Brown concluded the tour with a question and answer time. She reminded students that in addition to excellent academic programs, SSC has a variety of student organizations, athletic teams, and leadership opportunities. She encouraged students to consider a community college as the first step in their collegiate journey. The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
