Cameron GEAR UP students recently toured Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Tour guides Jo-Ann Murcho and Kaye Collier greeted students upon arrival. The tour began by viewing a massive 17 ft x 60 ft wall drawing designed by Sol LeWitt. Next, students walked through an abstract expressionist art gallery with works of art by the likes of Joan Mitchell and were encouraged to find some appreciation of the different pieces. They also received a history lesson over John Trumbull’s “Portrait of Alexander Hamilton”. The tour ended with a viewing of “We the People” by Nari Ward and a discussion about what makes us American. Overall, the students viewed types of art that originated in America and the history behind it.
The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
