McCurtain GEAR UP students toured the University of Oklahoma

McCurtain tenth and eleventh-grade GEAR UP students recently toured the OU (University of Oklahoma) campus in Norman, Okla. The tour began with a greeting from Mr. Alejandro at the Visitor Center. He showed a slideshow of the campus and spoke about how to prepare for college, the different organizations on campus, clubs open to students, and degrees offered at OU. OU has 20,000+ undergraduate programs available to students. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions about the campus. Then students were let on a walking tour of the campus by OU students Pashioun and Alyssa. During the tour, GEAR UP students learned the layout, history, and some fun facts about OU. A few things that stood out to the students were a couple of fun facts. The first was the all-you-can-eat Chick-fil-A, and the second was OU’s largest cereal bar in the Big 12. The tour gave students a first-hand experience of what a university has to offer.   The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
