Spiro ninth and tenth-grade Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of the Holocaust and Human Rights Museum in Dallas, Tx. During the guided tour, GEAR UP students learned the history of the Holocaust. Although the tour was virtual, the guides were interactive with the students. Guides highlighted artifacts, maps, and statistics regarding the Holocaust. They explained the different types of camps, where they were located, the uprisings, and how the people were affected. One of the most talked-about portions of the tour from the students was the boxcar that was used to move people to the camps and the number of lives lost. It was a tour that the students said they would not forget. After the tour, the museum gave each student a free pass for them and two family members to tour the museum in person. The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017 and will serve over 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
