McAlester Tenth Grade GEAR UP Students Virtually Tour Seminole State College

One hundred forty-three McAlester tenth grade GEAR UP students recently participated in a virtual tour of Seminole State College. Due to COVID-19, and following the school’s safety procedures, adjustments were made to the normal on-campus college field trip to give students the opportunity to learn about college at SSCOK. Using Zoom, a video conferencing platform, students connected with SSCOK Recruitment Specialist Britney Honsinger who discussed several topics, the benefit to attending a community college, the differences between a bachelor’s degree and an associate’s degree, academic programs offered at SSCOK, tuition and fees costs, financial aid, and admissions requirements. Honsinger also showed students a virtual tour of campus allowing students to see classrooms, dorm rooms, and other aspects of the college. At the end of the meeting, Honsinger held a question and answer session with the students, giving them the opportunity to learn more about college and SSCOK. The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
