Shady Point eighth grade GEAR UP students visit NSU

Seventeen Shady Point eighth grade GEAR UP students recently toured NSU (Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah. Students began the day at the University Center where they were greeted by NSU Campus Visit Program Graduate Assistant Bailey Rush, and NSU Student Ambassadors Tim Gardenhigh and Cheyenne Johns. Rush presented students with an overview of NSU, including information about admissions and scholarships, campus life activities, and degree programs. According to Affordable Schools, NSU is ranked 25th in Most Attractive Yet Affordable College Campuses in the United States. In 2017, NSU was honored with Tree Campus USA recognition for its commitment to effective urban forest management by the Arbor Day Foundation. Shady Point students enjoyed touring the beautiful campus and experiencing the fall foliage. After touring NSU, students enjoyed a Tahlequah favorite, Sam and Ella’s Chicken Palace, for lunch.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
