Antlers GEAR UP students visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum

Antlers GEAR UP students recently visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum in Oklahoma City. Students began their tour outside with a ranger-guided tour of the grounds where they talked about the significance of the landscaping features. During this time, students were encouraged to find the name of a person on the symbolic chairs outside that represents a person killed during the bombing. Next, they explored the museum were they used interactive displays and diagrams located thru-out the museum showing the timeline of events from the 1995 bombing. The memorial features televisions that play newsreels from that period in time, as well as displays of artifacts and evidence used in the trials. After the tour, students were wrote inspirational message on the chalkboard walkway outside the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
