Harmony eighth grade GEAR UP students tour Southeastern Oklahoma State University

Seventeen eighth grade Harmony GEAR UP students recently toured SOSU (Southeastern Oklahoma State University) in Durant. The students were met in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union by Admissions Counselor and Recruiter Steven Harris. After a brief overview of college life, organizations, and student services, Harris led the students on a walking tour of the campus. Students visited an apartment-style residence hall, and learned about dormitory living and other housing options. Students also visited several instructional facilities, including the Fine Arts building, which houses the Communications Department that is home to the campus radio station, newspaper and magazine. Harris provided students with details about SOSU’s aviation program, which is one of the top collegiate programs in Oklahoma. He also mentioned the safety program, which is one of the largest and highest-ranked in the country. After touring campus, students returned to the Student Union where they enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria. The day ended with a brief review by Harris as he encouraged students to start planning now for college as they head into high school.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s GEAR UP program. Eastern received a $17 million federal GEAR UP grant in 2017, and will serve more than 3,000 students in 39 area schools for seven years.
