Area Math and Science Teachers Attend Texas Instruments Training in McAlester

Fifteen area middle school math and science teachers recently participated in a two-day beginner TI (Texas Instruments) workshop while 13 teachers participated in a one-day intermediate and advanced training at Eastern Oklahoma State College in McAlester. The workshops were sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP and was designed to help teachers integrate technology effectively into instruction. The trainings were conducted by Texas Instruments Specialists Mike Smith, Fred Ferneyhough, Sandra Hocutt, and Cassie Whitecotton.

“These trainings were a great way to begin the 2019-2020 school year,” said GEAR UP Professional Development Coordinator Brianna Brassfield. “It’s a joy to hear local teachers collaborating and learning how to better utilize technology to implement in their classrooms.”

In addition to the trainings, teachers are coached by TI Specialists throughout the current school year. The Specialists visit partner schools and provide guidance for teachers delivering math and science instruction.

The technology, training and coaching are provided by Eastern Oklahoma State College’s 2017 GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grant. GEAR UP is a federal initiative to increase the number of low income students who enter and successfully transition into post-secondary education. Eastern is beginning its third year of the $17 million grant, serving students, teachers, parents, and administrators in 39 partner schools in Southeast Oklahoma.
